Pocket doors or Sliding barn doors?

Which one for the main bathroom? The picture for the sliding barn door is more flattering (apartment therapy) but functionality wise I am uncertain which one would suit our little home better.

  1. I vote the sliding barn door. It's fun and different. It'd give the house even more personality! (though I should reveal that I love farms and the country....so that may influence my choices.)

  2. How thick is your wall? Pocket doors usually require a thicker wall sandwich in order to accomodate the door/hardware/etc. (assuming its finished on both sides.) Sliding barn door would require more wall space for clearance. I'm not sure how those things lock though, or how much structure they require so it doesn't fall off when someone slams it. The barn door pic is a little strange to me with the framed opening, I would think it would be more minimal. On a side note, the hardware is neat!

  3. Well, we are ripping out the interior of the bathroom completely. so, either setup would work. We have a good amount of wall space so that won't be an issue. I'm not sure how the door will look in the end but I am leaning towards the barn door setup. the hardware makes me happy.

  4. The barn doors are a new, fun, and modern look... but they'll go out of style in the next ten years. If you're looking for something you won't have the urge to change or will keep its resale value, I would probably go for a plain pocket door (they can still look nice).

Oh, and barn doors take up precious wall space!

  5. Michael, I agree with Kasey. I love the barn doors, but pocket doors are much more practical. If you're down with hardware, try some industrial looking shelving for the bare wall where the barn door would have been? Eh? Good luck with your choice!

  7. ooh, fun! Both are great, though I do love the barn door photo. The key in my opinion is are you alright with giving up the wall space beside the door way? Anyways, I think the door must be yellow...

  8. I just came across your blog today- from the same link Kasey from the Thrifty Little blog mentioned. I really like your ideas. I like the barn idea the door and I think you should go for it as long as it wont bother you once its out of style! I also love the yellow.

  9. Curious to know, which door you went with if you've done so already? I'm looking in to putting in one of the two same doors. Any idea if the barn door locks? How much floor space you would lose by putting a barn vs the pocket?

    Thanks

  10. Yeah - how to lock barn door from inside and still look good . . . be able to unlock from outside without tools (eg. - little kid locked in bathroom)
